Environmental soil investigations

ENVIROCONE

Environmental investigation is an important first step towards remediation of polluted soils. There are countless examples of areas with soil polluted to such an extent that it represents a direct health danger. Being confronted with this matter while performing geotechnical soil investigations, it was a logical step to extend this method towards environmental soil investigation. The in situ soil investigation permits the in situ determination of the magnitude and type of pollution. In this way the method offers an objective choice of whether or not further laboratory analysis is needed and is therefore secure, time-saving and cost-efficient.

The Envirocone measures pH, redox potential and temperature. Often, informatin about the composition and permeability of distinct soil layers are needed. With the Envirocone it is also possible to measure the cone resistance qc, local friction fs and pore-water pressure U. Additional parameters such as electrical conductivity can also be incorporated.

Limitation

The Envirocone is limited to saturated soil layers.

Grouting

After completing tests the holes can be sealed by injecting a bentonite, cement or chemical grout. The floor of the CPT unit can be made of ribbed stainless steelplate with a collector construction around the CPT ram cylinders in which the fluid can be collected.

Soil samples

The Mostap-PS is a stainless steel sampler specially designed for taking soil samples from polluted soils (see accessories-samplers). Leaflet Mostap-PS

Conductivity

The Conductivity Cone is designed for the detection of contaminations which have a dipole character, such as heavy metals, or tracing fresh and saltwater carrying layers in coastal areas. (see cones-conductivity cone)
